Four Electrical Municipal Co-ops (EMCs) Pull Out of Risky Coal-Fired Plant Deal

We applaud the four Electric Municipal Co-ops (Jackson Electric Membership Corp., Diverse Power Inc., Excelsior EMC and GreyStone Power Corp. ) that have all announced this week that they are scrapping plans to build a coal-fired power plant in Washington County. This is proof that smart business people have learned the truth: Sinking more money into outdated, dirty energy sources such as coal just doesn’t make economic sense today, especially when cleaner and cheaper alternatives are available.

For the rest of the week members of the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee, including Rep. John Barrow who represents Washington County, are debating comprehensive energy legislation that would unleash the power of energy efficiency and clean energy to help rebuild our economy.

Five Co-ops remain in a business deal called Power 4 Georgians that is pushing for the plant. We hope that the reality of a movement towards clean and efficient energy at the federal level and in states around the country will encourage the remaining EMC’s  to cancel plans for this coal plant altogether.  Instead of sending money out of state to buy coal we can invest money in Georgia workers who can make homes more efficient and tap in to Georgia’s potential for renewable energy.”
