Support for strong,
comprehensive legislation to fight global warming is growing in Congress. There are more than 150 Representatives cosponsoring
the Safe Climate Act (H.R.
1590) including Georgia Representative John Lewis, and 19 Senators cosponsoring the Global Warming
Pollution Reduction Act (S. 309). These bills would limit global warming
emissions to levels that current science
says are needed to prevent the worst effects of global warming.
Background
More and more Georgians are
concerned about what global warming will mean for the health and well-being of
future generations. We’re working in Georgia and at the federal level to
reduce global warming pollution by at least 15 percent by 2020 and 80 percent by
2050—the science-based reductions needed to protect future
generations.
The
good news is that if we act now and act decisively we can stop global
warming and protect our children and future generations.
Unfortunately,
the Bush administration is refusing to act, but we don’t have time to
waste. The longer we wait, the more global warming pollution builds up
in the atmosphere—and the worse the effects will be.
That
is why Environment Georgia is working at the federal level, urging Congress to reject ineffectual proposals and set
science-based targets for reducing global warming pollution from power
plants, cars, and other sources.
