Drill off our coasts? No way!

No amount of drilling off Georgia’s coast is going to change the fact that our nation only has 3% of the world’s oil reserves, and that we consume 25% of the world’s oil supply. Lifting the moratorium would not ease pain at the pump for average Americans. Just last year, the president signed a bill to open 8 million acres to new drilling, and instead of going down, gas prices are now at an all time high.

Letter	Dear Legislator, Drilling off Georgia's coast is not the answer to our energy crisis: Lifting the moratorium would not ease pain at the pump for average Americans -- it would only add to the record profits of the oil industry. You should be standing up for our coast, not trying to undermine decades of protection. Instead, we should continue to raise the fuel economy of our cars, pass legislation to override the Bush administration's attempts to block the Clean Cars program, and adopt other, existing energy-saving technologies that cut pollution, curb global warming and create good jobs. These cheaper, cleaner and faster policies reduce short-term demand and costs while also providing long-term solutions to our energy needs, and they do not require us to put our favorite vacation destinations and coastal ecosystems at risk.
